Tennis Wearbands
If you have access to a ball machine – here is a fantastic footwork drill incorporating one of my favourite training tools – Wearbands - for improving stability and balance while hitting live balls.
Tennis is all about reading the approaching ball. Ball machines are great because they feed very accurately, but still randomly enough so that you have to read the feed!!
Here we have set the machine so that the balls are not too wide. Cadence Brace (#1 ranked Canadian in her age group) must read each approaching ball and choose whether to Slice, Go Open or Closed on the BH, and then whether to go Open, Step In or Lateral Hop on the FH. Between 8-10 reps over 4-6 sets is a great training sequence.
When the Wearbands are on they keep Cadence low, working her strength and balance. Then, after the Bands are quickly removed, her muscle memory maintains this stability and power even though the Bands are off.
As a coach, using the ball machine enables you to position yourself at the same end of the court as your player (at a socially safe distance of course 😊), giving you a better view of their footwork and movement, and the opportunity to coach and motivate your player throughout the drill.
What I love about Wearbands is that they are not just a conditioning system, but also a fantastic teaching tool!!
